Sustainability in focus! Politehnica students – electrically savvy

New on the web! The international journal Sustainability 16, no. 3 publishes the research article ”Electrically Savvy or Not? Tentative Portrait of the Romanian Student as a Consumer of Electric Devices and Utilities” co-authored by Cernicova-Buca, Mariana, Vasile Gherheș, Gabriel-Mugurel Dragomir, and Roxana-Mihaela Sirbu.

The article presents the results of the research carried out on a representative sample of Politehnica students, which prove to be electrically savvy and interested in a sustainable consumption of energy resources, although there is still room for developing sustainability skills. The student profile shows that female, on-campus students seem to be more inclined to adopt energy-saving, sustainable behaviors than students living (still) with their parents.

Campaigns such as the one led on campus under the contest ”Dorm – Champion of sustainability” can positively result in hundreds of KWh saved monthly. The findings of the research are useful for developing data-driven strategies to enhance and consolidate student energy saving behaviors and to plan for nudging messages to induce sustainable choices in the student body.

This research result adds to the knowledge on campus greening processes, as shown by the previous article, also published in Sustainability journal, “Students’ Awareness Regarding Environment Protection in Campus Life: Evidence from Romania” by Mariana Cernicova-Buca, Gabriel-Mugurel Dragomir, Vasile Gherheș, and Adina Palea, which attracted in the first two months over 500 views and downloads.
