What happens when we turn on the switch or plug in an electrical appliance? We access a network that brings us the energy produced by some form of energy (thermal, hydraulic, nuclear, chemical, mechanical, solar, etc.), transformed into electricity. Without electricity, modern life is impossible to imagine. However, the evolution of technology and diversification of household appliances can lead to an increased consumption of electric light.
Here’s what you can do, right now:
- Use energy-saving light bulbs. For the same light intensity, LED bulbs use 5-6 times less electricity than conventional ones and have 10 times longer lifespan.
- Use natural light as much as possible and don’t leave the light on when you don’t need it. If you can, illuminate only the place where you operate.
- Turn off the light when you leave the room.
- Choose modern appliances, class A++, A+ and A. They have higher efficiency, better technical performance, and lower energy consumption than those of the lower energy efficiency classes.
- Disconnect unused appliances from the power source. Switch off electronics and appliances when they are not in use. Electrical equipment continues to consume a significant amount of electricity if left unplugged, even if not in use.
- Unplug the chargers of mobile phones or batteries after charging, or they will continue to consume electric power.
- Use the refrigerator efficiently. Don’t put hot food in the fridge! This lowers the indoor temperature, causing an increased consumption of electricity.
- Use the washing machine efficiently. Turn it on at a load rate as close as possible to the rated capacity. For small and lightly soiled laundry, use the “quick”, “load at 1⁄2” or “wash 30 minutes” options. You will reduce water, electricity, and time consumption. With the right detergent, use washing programs at 30-40 degrees.
- Use the iron efficiently. You can save electricity by using irons with temperature regulator and switch on the handle, using residual heat or an ironing station.
- Use the electric stove efficiently. Choose cookware with a diameter that corresponds to the diameter of the burner. Turn off the electric stove a little before finishing cooking; the food will be ready due to the remaining heat.
- For tea or coffee, boil only the required amount of water. Avoid using electric room heaters or instant water heaters.
